Bohemian’s the Thing for Sarah Shell of 442 McAdam

Bag designer, Sarah Shell of 442 McAdam (pronounced four-four-two and based on her grandparents’ address) did not originally study fashion.  In fact, her undergraduate degree from McGill University in Montreal, is in biology.  After undergrad, Sarah left for New York to go to fashion school at Parsons.  Post-Parsons, Sarah worked in men’s fashion for Club Monaco and was also an intern at Gucci North America. It was at Gucci when Sarah, fell in love with bags and eventually created her first handbag, a gift for her mother.  That was when 442 McAdam was born.

442 McAdam officially launched in October 2008 and has received  a great deal of press in the few months since its launch, ranging from local Calgary publications to FASHION Magazine (February 2009 issue) and even international attention from a magazine in California.  The bags, all made with 100% cowhide, have a vintage feel, and are described by Sarah as “bohemian.”  The metal hardware on metal hardware on the bags are generally made from vintage furniture handles Sarah finds at antique and estate sales and the bag straps are from rifle slings.

In addition to media, 442 McAdam has made appearances in a variety of shows, including Downtown Calgary Fashion Week, Edmonton Fashion Week, shows in LA, and more recently, LG Fashion Week and the One of a Kind show, both in Toronto.

442 McAdam bags come in a variety of different sizes and styles and for both men and women.  Prices range from $240 to $800 and can be purchased online and in a variety of stores, including Pink Sugar in Calgary, Edmonton’s Thread Hill and Vancouver’s Little Dream.  442 McAdam will be available in Toronto this fall.
