It’s hard to be a teenage girl these days, amidst flipping through magazines or turning on your television- it’s easy to succumb to the pressure of fitting the ‘mold’. West 49 however, held their fifth edition of the Sooo Not a Model contest this past summer: which sought out to find their version of a “top model”- a girl who is sporty, fun, edgy, and original. It didn’t hurt if they were into action sports either!

More than 1,000 online entries were received from girls nationwide, Monica Grix, from Keswick, Ontario, being one of them.

“I entered this contest because I thought it would be such a great opportunity- and it definitely was! Why wouldn’t you want to model for West 49!?” says Grix, “It was great to support a contest that encourages you to be you”.

Grix, along with five other hopefuls, were chosen as the grand-prize winners for this years Sooo Not a Model contest- based upon their photos, Q&A’s, video submissions. Aside from getting the “top model” treatment when they were flown to Muskoka Woods resort, here in Ontario, for a weekend photo shoot with a professional photographer-  the girls were also featured in a 8-page spread of this month’s issue of Seventeen Magazine.

“Aside from loving all the West 49 clothes I got to wear, I loved getting to meet all the new people”- they were all super cool. It was great being able to see what goes on behind the scenes, especially because I’m into photography” states Grix. “I’m sooo not a model!”
