An Old Fashioned Experience at Avenue Diner

Cynthia Cheng

Most diners in the city don’t live up to the nostalgic, old fashioned goodness of the Avenue Diner on Davenport and Avenue Road.  A small shop with very few tables and a counter, the restaurant has been around since the 1940s.  Only open for breakfast and lunch, the menu choices are very much diner classics, including and fries, chicken fingers, club sandwiches as well as breakfast goodies like bacon and eggs or pancakes.

Like old diners, portion sizes are a good size – not too big – and is served on a medium-sized plate.  Toppings for the burger are included, with a lot of different classical choices.  I asked for my favourite classics (lettuce, tomato, onions and relish) for my cheeseburger.  There wasn’t anything special about the toppings – just regular things one would find at any burger place.  However, the fries (which were served on a separate plate) were very crisp.  Customer service was also good for a diner.   One thing that was NOT that great was the coffee.  It tasted like water.

People who have gone to the diner have mentioned to me that breakfasts at the Avenue Diner are delicious.  Stay tuned for a write-up on that very soon.

The Avenue Diner is located on Davenport Road, just west of Avenue.  Its hours are weekdays, 7 am to 4 pm; Saturday, 7 am to 3 pm and Sunday, 8 am to 3 pm.  The Avenue Diner’s phone number is 416-924-5191
